Alex Shibutani: Rhythm, Resolve, and a Return Aimed at Milano Cortina 2026
Born April 25, 1991, in Boston, Alex Hideo Shibutani grew up on rinks from Colorado Springs to Ann Arbor and, alongside his sister Maia, turned precise edges and musical timing into medals at every level. As the “Shib Sibs,” they became two-time U.S. champions, three-time World medalists, and double Olympic bronze medalists at PyeongChang 2018 (ice dance and the team event). They were also the first ice dancers of Asian descent to medal at the Olympics.
After 2018, the pair stepped away. In late 2019, Maia was diagnosed with a malignant kidney tumor and underwent surgery, a health battle that indefinitely delayed any comeback. During the hiatus, they created choreography, worked in media, and authored children’s books, but left competition open-ended until health and timing aligned. On May 1, 2025, the Shibutanis announced they’re returning to competition for the Olympic season, training under Marina Zoueva and Massimo Scali.
Alex’s value is structural: clean partnering, unshakeable patterns, in-lift calm, and late-program precision that keeps levels intact when fatigue hits. Whether the arc ends with medals or a valedictory skate, their comeback already widens the sport’s frame: two trailblazing Asian American Olympians choosing to write another chapter on their terms. And if the programs click in 2025–26, the door remains open for select tours, creative projects, or even one more cycle.
